Continuing from "Prophecy", Wizard, Confessor and Seeker formulate a plan to catch up with Fane and the Book of Counted Shadows. Chase shows up to help but gets a cool reception from Richard. They explain the Seeker, the Book and what has to be done, to Chase.

Meanwhile, Darken Rahl, after 23 years of peace, knows the Seeker has been named. He murders Fraden for failing to kill the Seeker, Fraden having killed every first-born son in Brennadin for Rahl. Rahl writes his journeybook in Fraden's blood. His troops are to assemble the most powerful sorcerers and bombard the Boundary with magic to breach it.

At Chase's home, Kahlan reveals Char, a Night Wisp, to Richard. Char's magic got Kahlan through the Boundary. Fane convinces Richard's brother Michael to intercept the trio which he does under the guise of protecting the village from the witch's magic. During the melee, Char is killed saving Richard from an arrow. Chase is sent home by Richard but on arrival he finds Fane has his family hostage. Fane thinks Chase knows how to breach the Boundary. Chase gives up the name of the Bone Lady. Fane takes Chase's daughter Laura and persuades the Bone Lady to hand over a Night Stone.

The trio reach the Boundary where Darken Rahl's men are trying to break through. Richard is enticed by shadow people from the underworld to enter the boundary. Zedd pulls him back to save him being dragged into the underworld but is himself attacked and poisoned. Kahlan takes Zedd to Chase's home. Richard and Chase rescue Laura.

Fane breaks the Boundary and lets Rahl's troops through. Richard and Kahlan fight Fane's men. Richard kills Fane and retrieves the Book. Rahl's men confront Richard, who throws the Book into a fire so it is of no value. Kahlan uses magic to turn the soldiers on each other but in doing so is incapacitated. Richard saves her, Zedd arrives. In burning the Book of Counted Shadows, Richard has lost the secrets it contained but inadvertently fulfilled a prophecy; that he would use the Book to help defeat Darken Rahl.

The fight scenes in the series are a mixture of normal speed and slo-mo. The editing is simple but excellent, incidentally allowing for good captures of the fighting.
