In the 51st century, the TARDIS lands on a derelict spaceship. On the ship is an ornate fireplace. Through it the Doctor sees a young girl, Reinette, who is in 18th century Paris. The fireplace flips around and the Doctor finds himself in Paris, but some months later. There are a number of such time and space portals on the ship. They also find clockwork androids that are stalking Reinette. Rose, Mickey and the Doctor try to save Reinette from the androids who have some unknown purpose.
